Outer Reaches — Enamel on Copper Brooch

 Outer Reaches is a reminder that there is always more beyond the edges of our everyday world. It speaks to curiosity, perspective, and the quiet power of reaching outward — of choosing to make a difference, even in small ways. The layered enamel carries a sense of depth and distance, like looking into something vast and full of possibility.

The surface is shaped by fire and chance. Each enamel firing reveals patterns I can guide but never fully control, and that collaboration with the kiln is what gives the piece its character. No two firings are ever the same — this brooch exists only once.

Every step was built by hand at my bench. I cut the metal, smooth every edge, and layer the enamel slowly through multiple kiln firings to develop color and movement. Some pieces pass through the kiln five times, others twenty. The process is deliberate, patient, and personal.

The back is finished in textured copper, a metal long associated with warmth and grounding. Many people are drawn to copper for its natural connection to the body and the Earth, adding another layer of meaning to the piece.
