Golden Horizon

Mountain Series No. 35 — Collected

There are stones that seem to hold a landscape before I ever touch them.

Golden Horizon began with one of those stones.

The Maligano Jasper at the center of this piece carries what looks like an entire mountain scene within it. Warm golden earth rises above layers of gray and black, while the intricate patterning near the bottom feels almost like rocky terrain stretching toward the viewer. I didn't need to invent the landscape—the stone had already created it.

My job was simply to listen to it.

I set the Maligano Jasper in sterling silver against a substantial, darkened and textured silver backdrop, allowing the clean geometry of the setting to contrast with the completely organic world inside the stone. A small green accent stone adds one unexpected point of color near the upper corner.

And the story doesn't end on the front. I created an entire landscape on the reverse in silver—mountains rising beneath a textured sky, a forest along the shoreline, and flowing water below. Even the back became part of Golden Horizon, turning the pendant into a small world meant to be discovered from both sides.

Below the pendant, three hand-built dangles continue the earthy palette with Jasper beads, adding movement without taking attention away from the remarkable central stone.

This piece became No. 35 in my Mountain Series, a collection inspired by the mountains, ridgelines and changing skies that continually find their way into my work.

Like every piece in the series, Golden Horizon was created only once. The patterns within this Maligano Jasper can never be duplicated, and neither can the piece that grew from it.
