This and That — Enamel on Copper Brooch

Life is rarely one thing or another — it’s a little bit of this and a little bit of that.
That’s exactly what inspired this piece.
Silver wire is suspended within the enamel like moments captured in time, layered into the surface and locked there by fire. The patterns that form during firing are never fully predictable, and that element of surprise is what I love most about working with enamel. Each kiln firing reveals something new, something that cannot be repeated.
This brooch is built from the ground up at my bench. I cut the metal, shape it, sand every edge, and fire the enamel multiple times to slowly build depth and color. Some pieces pass through the kiln 5 times, others 20 — it depends on what the enamel wants to become. The result is a piece of wearable art that exists only once.
The back is finished in textured copper, a metal long associated with warmth, grounding, and connection to the body. Many people are drawn to copper for how alive it feels against the skin — a natural material that links us back to the Earth.
Art jewelry should feel personal. It should feel like it chose you.
