There are stones that seem to hold a landscape so clearly that very little imagination is needed to see it.

Prairie Dawn was one of those stones.

The Polychrome Jasper appears almost like a landscape painted by nature itself. Warm golden earth stretches across the center while soft lavender, gray and white rise above it like a cloud-filled morning sky. A darker band near the bottom gives the scene depth, as though another ridge lies in the distance.

I chose not to compete with that landscape. Instead, I built the sterling silver setting to frame it and let the stone tell its own story.

Above the Jasper, a sculptural silver sun rises over the scene, its face looking down upon the landscape below. Beneath the stone, five hand-formed silver elements move freely, adding movement and giving the pendant a distinctly organic finish.

The textured edge surrounding the Jasper adds another layer of handwork without interrupting the remarkable natural picture held within the stone.

To me, the finished piece felt like that quiet moment when the first morning light begins to move across an open landscape.

That became Prairie Dawn.
